Each year, EMBO elects promising young scientists to join its Young Investigators Programme. In 2020, Prof. Bert De Rybel (VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology) and Prof. Martin Guilliams (VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research) will join the ranks of these outstanding researchers.
EMBO is an organization that aims to build a network of Europe’s finest researchers in the life sciences. A large part of EMBO’s efforts is geared towards supporting talented young scientists to build an independent research career and allow them to pursue great science in the best possible environment.
EMBO’s Young Investigator Programme (YIP) recognizes the early career scientists who have shown substantial potential in their respective fields. Election to the program entails four years of practical and financial support as well as networking opportunities with leading scientists and other EMBO members.
For 2020, 27 young scientists were selected. Two of those work in Belgium. And… both of them are VIB-UGent scientists: Prof. Bert De Rybel (VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology) and Prof. Martin Guilliams (VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research).
Bert De Rybel leads the Vascular Development team in the VIB-UGent Center of Plant Systems Biology. The research topics in Bert's research group are focused on unraveling the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms that control vascular cell proliferation and cell division orientation in plants.
Martin Guilliams leads the Macrophage Ontogeny and Functional Specialization team in the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research. His team focuses on the development and function of liver resident macrophages.
“Becoming part of the EMBO YIP family is fantastic news,” he says. “It is a great recognition for the hard work of the team over the years. EMBO YIP members do not only get access to the EMBL Core Facilities, they also get to participate in valuable EMBO meetings and training courses. This membership will also foster exciting collaborations within Europe, and we will make sure to make the most of the opportunities offered by the YIP program."
Bert agrees: “Entry into the EMBO Young Investigator Program is an amazing opportunity to challenge scientific concepts across different fields of expertise and in different model systems. Furthermore, EMBO supports the organization of meetings and offers travel grants that will be beneficial for my entire research team.”
