Over the next four years, 17 partners from 11 European countries will work together to develop sustainable production systems for scientifically validated plant-based cosmetic ingredients. This will happen within the framework of InnCoCells - a Horizon 2020 project with ILVO, VIB, and AddEssens as Flemish partners.
More sustainable cosmetics
InnCoCells refers to Innovative and high-quality cosmetic products from plants and plant cells. It is a four-year research project that aims to revolutionize how plant components are discovered, produced, and developed into interesting ingredients for cosmetics. The main goal is to create sustainable natural cosmetic ingredients using innovative production methods.
The starting material originates from plant cell cultures and plants grown in greenhouses, fields, or air cultivation installations or derivatives from agricultural waste streams. Production surpluses will be processed cost-effectively and ecologically to minimize the overall impact on the environment.
Scientifically sound and plant-based
One of the fundamental principles of InnCoCells approach is to extensively validate the biological activity of all ingredients developed in the project with cell-based assays. Only those plant extracts and natural products with the most promising biological activity and environmentally friendly production process will be further developed and tested on human volunteers.
“ILVO and VIB look forward to working with all partners in this strong European research consortium and are convinced of the importance of this groundbreaking research to accelerate the transition to a sustainable bio-based economy.”
VIB coordinates the optimization of the plants and cell lines used as starting material. In addition, using tomatoes as a model system, they will develop a universal toolbox that will promote biomass production and the accumulation of bioactive ingredients.
